No full text
This thesis explores the use of mobile phones to support English vocabulary learning in Malaysian schools and develops an implementation strategy which consists of the policy and procedure through an Educational Research and Development (ER&D) methodology (Borg and Gall, 1979) with the interview as the main research tool. The methodology consists of rigorous steps in developing, evaluating and disseminating the implementation strategy as well as exploring other issues associated with mobile learning implementation in Malaysian schools.Based on the respondent’s perspectives, it has been established that the implementation strategy developed in this study would have the potential to provide guidance in the implementation of mobile learning in Malaysian schools. There is also a potential to utilise mobile phones to complement the existing practices in Malaysian schools: adding value to the existing initiatives for teaching the English Language in Malaysian schools; complementing the ICT policy in the Malaysian Education System; complementing the Malaysian Smart School vision to utilise mobile technologies; and becoming an alternative teaching and learning tool. This study also explores emerging themes in the implementation of mobile learning. These are the opportunities of utilising mobile phones including: to support English Language subject; as an affordable device; as a common device among students; as a future teaching and learning tool; as an engaging and motivational learning device; to support various learning activities; and to prepare students for their future with digital literacy. The challenges identified are: misuse, current educational policy, management and maintenance, stakeholders’ attitude, digital divide and personal space invasion. The study sheds light on the situation regarding the utilisation of mobile phones including the challenges that need to be addressed to make it a reality. It is envisaged that the implementation strategy would help towards the realisation of mobile learning implementation in Malaysian schools

Get PDF
This book demonstrates why and how it is necessary to redesign Islamic Education curriculum in the K-12 sector globally. From Western public schools that integrate Muslim perspectives to be culturally responsive, to public and private schools in Muslim minority and majority contexts that teach Islamic studies as a core subject or teach from an Islamic perspective, the volume highlights the unique global and sociocultural contexts that support the disparate trajectories of Islamic Education curricula. Divided into three distinct parts, the text discusses current Islamic education curricula and considers new areas for inclusion as part of a general renewal effort that includes developing curricula from an Islamic worldview, and the current aspirations of Islamic education globally. By providing insights on key concepts related to teaching Islam, case studies of curriculum achievements and pitfalls, and suggested processes and pillars for curriculum development, contributors present possibilities for researchers and educators to think about teaching Islam differently. This text will benefit researchers, doctoral students, and academics in the fields of secondary education, Islamic education, and curriculum studies. Those interested in religious education as well as the sociology and theory of religion more broadly will also enjoy this volume

The fecal contamination of urban streams mainly originates from sewer cross-connections, stormwater and combined sewer overflows. The cumulative impacts of these discharges onto the receiving environment have become strikingly evident and warrant further clarification regarding their origins. No method within the current toolbox for fecal contamination source screening in urban areas presents a miraculous solution accepted as the best method. The combination of multiple indicators in order to develop a sanitary index could eventually become the object of standardizatio

Engagement in physical exercise differs with different socio demographic status. Females exhibit lower levels of physical exercise performance, it seems that their motivation to exercise is differ. Various types of motivation that influence exercise performance regularly were recognized. This study aims to determine the relationship between 21 motivating reasons and sociodemographic factors, concentrating more on the gender difference. Method: A study was conducted on 501 adults performing exercise. Participants were interviewed using a questionnaire comprises of 21 motivating reasons. Each reason was measured on a fivepoint scale as, strongly disagree (1) to strongly agree (5). The sum, and mean score of all the 21 reasons was used as the dependent variable versus each socio-demographic factor. The mean score of each item was used as the dependent variable versus gender. Results: Significant inverse correlations were detected between motivating reasons score with; age (r=-0.122, p=0.007), BMI (r=-0.091, p=0.042), and household income (r=-0.095, p=0.036). Unmarried or free of chronic diseases respondents showed, significantly higher motivating mean score (p=0.032, 0.010 respectively). No significant difference in the mean score with level of education and gender. However, males showed significantly higher means score in two motivating reasons to; have a positive effect on the sex life (4.18±1.01, p<0.001), have more energy to go about the daily chores (4.62± .63, p= 0.027). No significant gender difference in the mean score for other motivating reasons. Conclusion: young, unmarried, lower income, lower BMI and no chronic illness individuals have higher motivating reasons. Both genders were almost equally motivated in performing exercises
